Angola Cables, the telecommunications multinational, has achieved a notable milestone by now being ranked as the 24th largest global internet interconnection operator by the Centre for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA), a reference in the sector.
Based at the University of California at San Diego, the Centre for Applied Internet Data Analysis is a leader in the academic field of Internet measurement. Worldwide recognition is measured by independent North American entities that monitor global traffic, interconnections in the internet cone and recognise the Angola Cables network as strategic in its connections to other countries in Africa, with more than 70 percent of African internet traffic passing through its network.
With a robust network that already carries more than 18,488 Tbps, more than 1 per cent of the world's Internet traffic is processed by Angola Cables' infrastructure, especially due to the privileged position of the cables that connect the Atlantic (Brazil-USA-Europe), the figures show the capacity of this global network to deliver global content locally with efficiency, low latency, resilience and high security.
The achievement puts Angola on the map as a growing strategic connectivity hub for the data economy, linking continents such as Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia. The SACS submarine cable, which directly connects Angola to Brazil, already plays a crucial role in enabling major internet companies such as Amazon, Google and Facebook to connect Africa to North and South America.
Angola Cables' AS 37468, now in 24th place in CAIDA's world ranking of internet providers, reflects the reach and efficiency of the company's global network, both in terms of direct and indirect customers, analysed from BGP paths.
The CAIDA ranking confirms Angola Cables as the leading African transit operator, which propagates other ASNs the most on the Internet, directly or indirectly. This achievement is the result of a solid peering policy, advanced BGP routing strategies and a highly connected IP network, which significantly improves latency and connectivity, offering customers better performance, greater visibility of their prefixes/ASNs on the Internet and high availability in global routing.
Among the services impacted by this improvement in global connectivity are IP Transit, IP Gamer, IP Exchange, IP Cache and DIA, which now offer even more performance and reliability to their customers, especially Angolan companies.
